How Much Gravel for a Driveway? Layers, Depth, and Cost
Gravel Calculator
Volume = length × width × depth. 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. Tons depend on material density, so the density used is shown in the result.
Estimate only. Density varies by quarry and moisture. For large orders, confirm with your supplier's scale ticket. Delivery, minimum order and labour are usually extra.
A gravel driveway is built in layers. Calculate each layer separately, then add them together.
Layers
Base: crusher run, 6 to 8 inches, compacted. Surface: crushed stone #57, 2 to 4 inches.
Worked example
A driveway 12 x 50 ft, with a 6 inch base plus a 3 inch surface, needs about 11.11 cubic yards for the base and 5.56 cubic yards for the surface, before waste. Use the gravel driveway calculator for a full layered estimate with compaction and waste.
FAQ
Can I use one layer only? A single thin layer ruts and washes out; a compacted base plus surface lasts far longer.
